Wikipedia states that the earliest mention of the phrase SEO was in the form of a spam message posted on Usenet on 26th July, 1997. This fact has been stated by industry analyst Danny Sullivan. There should be corrections to the Wikipedia entry according to Adam Audette, a veteran internet marketer. He says that John Audette was already using the term search engine optimization at least five months earlier to the reference made in Wikipedia. On top of that, SEO was offered as a legal service was completely contradictory to the intentions of the spam message recorded on Usenet.

John Audette’s online agency was found in 1995 by the name Multimedia Marketing Group or MMG. This agency was the starting point of some of the pre-eminent SEO’s. These included Adam Sherk, Derrick Wheeler, Detlev Johnson, Jeremy Sanchez, Bill Hunt, Marshall Simmonds and Andre Jansen.
In fact Bend, Oregon is actually the birthplace of a current industry by the name of search engine optimization or SEO. MMG was later bought by Tempus Group in 1999 but the place still houses one of the world’s finest SEO consultants and shops including AudetteMedia by Adam Audette.

It is recorded that Danny Sullivan had actually visited MMG’s offices at Bend. He traveled that far to train the amateur team on the rudiments of search engine optimization.
