Make your business sweeter with twitter

Although it was launched only two years back, twitter is a red hot website on the internet these days. Some big companies have been fast to promote their websites on the Twitter, but local businesses have been lagging behind. Twitter doesn’t pass on “link juice”. This means that they don’t pass on PageRank value from Twitter to the sites that are linked to it. But it is also thought that citations sometimes do help to increase pagerank. So it is recommended to create a profile on Twitter and link back to your website.

Twitter for “Word of Mouth” Publicity
The primary value of Twitter though, is what we can have from engaging with the audience and by using Twitter as a communication vehicle. This can happen, especially when Twitter is used as a vehicle of “word of mouth” publicity. If you have a restaurant or some other entertainment venue that people are looking for frequently, then you can direct them to your place.

There are a lot of tweets on Twitter with users asking for advice on finding restaurants in NYC etc. You can respond to them and leave them with your address. Some suggest that this might be considered as spam. But I believe that since the user requires that information and we are providing it to him or her, it isn’t called as spamming. Promoting your interests with over aggression, Eg. By directing all travelers in New York to your restaurant might be considered as spamming.  But since they are interested in visiting restaurants in NYC, then it is well within your rights to suggest them your own.

Services spawning from Twitter
In fact, you can use Twitter search for this. The Twitter Hawk can also help you with the same. There is also a service called as Twellow. This service uses Twitter profiles to build a sort of online yellow pages. This means that if your business doesn’t exist on Twitter, it doesn’t exist on Twellow too.

Leverage the power of Twitter
Some suggestions to leverage the power of Twitter to help your business:

  1. Send instant coupons after you build a good following. You can announce on the spot impromptu discounts on Twitter.
  2. You can also give coupons to people who have tweeted you to their friends.
  3. Entertainment venues can use Twitter to tweet out the events of the week, day.
  4. Tweet with a partner: Partnering with you other local business will help garner more tweets.
  5. Once you have a reasonable following, you can use Twitter for polls etc. to gain feedback from them.
