Content management, often referred as CM, consists of technologies and processes which provide support to digital information’s evolutionary life cycle. The digital information is called content or digital content. Digital content might be in the form of some text like multimedia files, such as video or audio files, documents or some other file type. This follows content lifecycle and requires management.
The goals and practices of Content management always vary with aim. The life cycle of digital content comprises of 6 primary phases and they are to create the content, update it, publish it, translate it, archive and retrieve it.

Content management is a collaborative process. The basic roles and responsibilities of people who create content are:
- Creator, whose responsibility is to create and edit content
- Editor, whose responsibility is to tune the message of content and the delivery style, including localization and translation
- Publisher is the one who releases the content for usage purpose.
- Administrator is responsible to manage access permissions to files and folders, which is generally done by assigning the right to access to roles or user groups. They assist and help in many other ways
- Consumer, the most important person, who reads and takes in content when it is shared or published.
The Content management system, which is a collection of automated processes, has the following features:
- It imports and creates the multimedia material and the documents.
- It identifies the key users and gives their role.
- It has the ability to give responsibilities and roles to various instances of content categories.
- It defines the workflow tasks, which is many times coupled with messaging in order to alert the content managers, so that they can change the content.
- It is able to manage and track the multiple versions of content’s single instance.
- It is able to get the content published to repository in order to support access for the content.
Content management system is used, as web content management system where it manages the website, to manage work of editorial staff organization in newspaper agencies, to manage workflow in article publication and in document management system. It is not an easy job to manage content, for this you need expertise.
